Scanner problems in Windows 8 64 bit

Windows 8 is the latest release from Microsoft. It is mainly an upgrade to its predecessor, Windows 7 and as such it is compatible with most Windows 7 drivers. Still the support for drivers has improved a lot in Windows 8. However, after the release of the Windows 8 developer preview, many Windows 8 drivers’ issues are encountered by users who installed it in their system. These Windows 8 drivers’ issues occur because there are many more drivers and supporting application yet to be created.

One among such Windows 8 drivers’ problems is incompatibility with Scanner devices. Users have reported that the Scan function doesn’t work due to driver issues in Windows 8, especially in the 64 bit edition. However, this issue can be solved easily with the troubleshooting steps given below.

Troubleshoot the Windows 8 problems with scanners

  • Right click on the .exe file for the driver and click Properties. You can find the .exe file in the original installation disc you received along with the scanner device.
  • Click on the Compatibility tab. Select “Run this program in compatibility mode for.”
  • Choose Windows 8 from the drop down list. Select “Run this program as an administrator” option under the Privilege Level topic.
  • Click Apply, click OK and then double click on the .exe file again to complete the installation.

If you find that the problem persists even after this, you will probably need to update the Device Drivers manually from the Device manager.

Access “Device Manager” and select ‘Device and Update Drive’ wizard which will give you two options-

1. Windows update
2. Browse my computer
Browse your computer from the device software DVD to the scanner folder.

If the same issue continues to trouble you, contact the device manufacturer for the latest drivers for the device.
